What to do When You’re Experiencing a Mental Health Crisis

Call your Mental Health Provider if you have one

  • Your provider is available to help you at any time in the event of a mental health crisis.  Make sure you know their after-hours phone number.

Call Crisis Services if you don’t have a Mental Health Provider

When to Go to the Emergency Room

  • If you can’t reach your provider or crisis services and you feel like you might harm yourself or someone else

Warmline

A warmline is an alternative to a crisis line that is run by trained “peers,” people who are in recovery, and provides an opportunity to talk with people who have lived experience with mental health or addictions challenges. You can reach the David Romprey Oregon Warmline at 1-800-698-2392.

Develop a Crisis Prevention Plan

Develop a Crisis Prevention Plan Crisis Prevention Plans are meant to help people we serve, their support persons and providers prepare for times when life seems too hard to manage. This plan is designed to support conversations about what would help when additional support or action is needed. We recommend you talk about this plan with a person who knows you well enough to understand your strengths and your challenges. It is best to complete this plan when you are feeling better about yourself and your life.

Use your own ideas and make this plan truly fit you. You can fill out this plan by yourself, with a peer support person, a family member, a friend or with a mental health provider.

The plan is most useful if it is available to you and your support people at moments of crisis. Consider having copies in several places:

  • Where you can find it easily as needed
  • On file with your mental health provider
